Desarrollo

From the end of the 15th century, the Ottomans had been putting on the pressure in the Western Mediterranean which produced regular outbreaks of fighting with Christian Europe. Philip II of Spain embarked on the last Crusade of Christianity. In 1571 the three powers under threat from the Turks - Spain, Venice and Rome - created the Holy League under the command of Don Juan of Austria, Charles I's illegitimate son. On October 7th of the same year he won an important victory at Lepanto marking the end of Turkish domination in the Western Mediterranean. The battle was depicted in a painting by G. W. Graesner.
